The Greenland ice sheet just experienced one of its strongest late-season melt events on record

CLIMATEWIRE | Ominous clouds rippled overhead, and scientist Jason Box raced to reach shelter before the rain hit.

He was right to find it foreboding. Over the next few days, the warm weather triggered a major melting episode in Greenland — a stunning event for September, which typically marks the end of the ice sheet’s melt season. Summer is Greenland’s main melting season. When ice melts at the surface, some of the liquid water trickles back into the porous snow on top of the ice sheet, where it refreezes. But some of it runs into the ocean, where it adds to rising seas. These runoff events are a major preoccupation for scientists keeping an eye on sea levels.

This year’s melt season had been relatively modest until the September episode. It was punctuated by a single “heat ripple” in July, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, which caused a moderate melt surge across the ice sheet. Scientists have warned these kinds of events may grow more frequent and more severe as the region keeps warming — increasing Greenland’s contributions to global sea-level rise.

Pardon me, you are liars 🤥, the sea in front of my house didn’t increase a single inch in 50 years!!

So the sky is falling for a change.

Doomed we are.

Global human Overpopulation

First the glacier warms up from -10°C to 0°, the ice melts superficially, now the glacier of Greenland karstifies, then the glacier will become crumbly and brittle by 2045, by 2050, the destroyed glacial ice of Greenland will go off as an icemur, like a whiskey on the rocks.

So what, life continues normal as before, right?

kevpluck Can someone explain why we use ‘may’ in these articles? Things ‘may change’, this stuff ‘may happen more often’. Is ‘may’ really the right word to use here?

Me too, really, we all did.

The scientist need more money to find out why. Lol

Many references to 'billion tonnes'. This is what a billion tonnes or a gigatonne looks like:

So what, propagandist shill?

sure it did wink wink

😑

Read the article and tell me that it matches the actual data regarding SMB. 2020 had a very mild melt year and there is most likely a significant increase in Greenland ice and snow for the year, nor was the late August anomaly of increased surface mass ever mentioned or suggested

anomalous at all. There was no mention of this increase in Surface Mass Balance in late August nor any mention of SMB at all, which is much more relevant than melt extent. Here is the SMB graphs:

This article is deceptive to the point of lying: yes, there was a large melt EXTENT episode, but this was largely the result of a late August snowstorm that added a huge amount of snow to Greenland, some of this melted leading to a large area melting, but the net balance was not

Will not affect world-wide Mean Sea Level in the least.

May I publish my invention in your journal? This is a fairly simple machine for generating clean energy. Or should I wait for a patent first? I have already applied for a patent. archintrident1976gmail.com

Oh noes..... it's a semi warm summer. The ice cubes in my cup are melting prematurely. How will we ever survive.....

Yeah, Wonder what From?

Oh deep and abiding joy!

Cheer up, Arctic ice cover is growing at a good pace and polar bear population is on an up.
