Conaway, too, is a thoughtful and collegial lawmaker who values public service over political knife-fighting. Much to our good fortune, as Andy Kim gives up his seat in the House to run for Senate, another deeply impressive candidate has stepped up to vie for it.
Like Kim, Conaway is a thoughtful and collegial lawmaker who values public service over political knife-fighting. And his sterling resume speaks to his intelligence, determination, and hard work over a lifetime. Conaway makes sophisticated arguments on healthcare topics he’s dealt with personally in the examination room, and in his role overseeing the public health department of Burlington County. He knows both the industry and how to get legislation passed.
One of the few differences is that Conaway, the son of a public-school teacher and a nurse, showed greater concern for taxpayers by endorsing pension and health reform, departing from the Democratic party line. Without that sensible measure, we might be another couple billion dollars in the hole right now.
This looks like a two-way race in a district that now leans more blue after redistricting in 2022, but of the several political outsiders also vying for the Democratic nomination, civil rights attorney Joe Cohn has the most serious background: He’s worked for the ACLU, the AIDS Law Project and led the government relations department at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, which advocates for free speech on campus. Yet he, too, lacks Conaway’s extensive experience.
