Governor points to statewide opinion poll as need for educational reformJUNEAU, Alaska - With lawmakers deep into the education funding debate, Gov. Mike Dunleavy on Tuesday touted a new state poll commissioned by his office to find out what Alaskans want to see when it comes to education.
Of those surveyed, 41% were from Anchorage and 11% were from rural Alaska, with 27% reporting Republican affiliation and 18% as Democrat. However, there were some questions surrounding the polling. For example, only 38% of those surveyed had school age-age children, and of that number 19% had children who went to a charter school.
“One of the big issues with charter schools that we’re wrestling with down here is do you turn over who’s running those charter schools and who’s authorizing those charter schools to the State Board of Education and take that away from the local communities? I think probably the majority of Alaskans would not agree with that, and that question was not asked in this poll,” Wielechowski said.
House Majority members have questioned those lawmakers supporting a higher BSA, and have asked if House Minority members want to pull money from the Permanent Fund dividend to fund a higher BSA. “There is only so many questions one can ask. There is always going to be the ability to second guess the questions in the poll. It just didn’t come up. It wasn’t explicitly left out. It just wasn’t something that came up.”
