Governor Abbott is determined to elect pro- school choice candidates after his proposed package failed in the last legislative session. Those opposed to his plan argue it would divert funding from already underfunded public schools , a claim the Governor disputes.
"I put a package together that would have provided for school choice, a teacher pay raise, $6 billion more in funding, and an end to the STARR test in the state of Texas. And they said, 'We don't want that; we don't want your money,' because they want to control their monopoly," Governor Abbott stated, referring to the teachers' unions that oppose his universal school choice program.
Northside American Federation of Teachers President Melina Espiritu Azocar criticized the Governor's proposal, highlighting its potential flaws. "We're certainly willing and ready to have a conversation with the governor. But what we don't want is funding to be removed from public education and put into private education with no stipulations or guidance. That's what we don't want to do," Azocar said.
The popularity of school choice among Texans remains a significant factor. A recent poll by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin found that 55% of Texans support a school choice program. Whether Governor Abbott's efforts will successfully bring pro-school choice representatives into office is yet to be determined, with four of those races currently in runoff elections and early voting already underway.Stay Connected
