U.S. Park Police, Secret Service agree to new policies on demonstrations in response to lawsuits by Black Lives Matter and other protesters outside Trump White House in June 2020

Police officers used tear gas to push back demonstrators outside the White House in Washington, D.C., in June 2020 during a protest over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.April 13, 2022 6:19 pm ET WASHINGTON—Two federal law-enforcement agencies will change how they respond to demonstrations as part of a settlement with protesters who sued the governmentin June 2020, the Justice Department said Wednesday.

As part of the agreement, the U.S. Park Police will require officers to wear visible badges and nameplates, set limits on the use of nonlethal force, adopt clearer policies on how to disperse crowds and work with other agencies on pre-event planning, officials said. The Secret Service agreed to change its policies to make clear that some law-breaking during demonstrations doesn’t provide blanket grounds to use force or clear crowds.
