Ruth Serven Smith al.com Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey responded to criticism from late night host John Oliver Monday, saying she’s not bothered by critiques from a “liberal, Hollywood-friendly agenda.”
The “Last Week Tonight” had two segments about Alabama Sunday — about the state’s utility companies and about new LGBTQ legislation, signed by Ivey in April, that criminalizes healthcare providers who offer gender-affirming care to transgender minors. The state is barred, for now, from enforcing part of the law by a court order.
Speaking as a white, middle-class citizen, we are concerned about decent schools, feeding the hungry, paying teachers and appropriate taxes for ALL. But we are also concerned about abortion, two-way racism, government overreach and the economy.
