Gov. Greg Abbott rallied a crowd at the Capitol to advocate for school voucher-like programs. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has embraced Senate Bill 8, which gets its first committee hearing Wednesday. House Speaker Dade Phelan hasn't prioritized the legislation.

hasn’t made “school choice” legislation a priority in the House, and there are questions whether the measure could pass his chamber.

Students who leave public schools will perform better under his plan, as would the schools they leave, Abbott said. Abbott has spent recent months traveling the state to advocate for school choice, monitoring school curricula and other so-called parental rights issues at “parent empowerment” nights. The governor’s office and the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative think tank, helped organize the event at the Capitol on Tuesday. TPPF hosted information sessions in the morning and afternoon for attendees and arranged buses for those like Romine and his students who traveled from out of town.Jordan Vonderhaar for The Texas Tribune

Strassman is supportive of Abbott’s approach, but he would like to see the program expanded to include children who are already in private schools. “Part of being a professional is being able to own your own shop. It’s not working in a union shop,” he said. “I value the associations and the unions and people taking care of teachers because I am a teacher and we’re all part of the same team.

Do better for public schools and teachers. All he's doing is trying to defund public schools. I didn't agree to have my tax dollars used to pay for private school for the wealthy. The fake 'christian' Republican rule in this state is terrible for actual Texans.

Making Texas the new Florida. Soon Abbott, just like DeSantis, will have to seek veterans to fill teacher shortages. The same talent pool used by white supremacist groups since after WWII. Deployed to Iraq I witnessed how easily some servicemembers viewed the locals as animals.

A “crowd” of 200 LMAO

Hilarious that all of those rubes that wanted this are also about to get this. Another slow motion FAFO.

The public schools are still not getting as much support from the state as they did in 2012, plus if you pass these are these parents going to be willing to vote for bonds to build new schools or to approve local tax increases for the public schools.

Great job GovAbbott ! 👍🔥

How about swim choice. Instead of using the public pool how about I get a voucher for a swim club. Or gym choice-- instead of the rec center I get a voucher for a private gym. Book choice-- instead of using the public library I get a voucher for Amazon. Vouchers all around.

Were those “free” buses that brought them to town paid for by tax payers or Abbott’s pot?

The centerpiece legislation for the New Jim Crow.

Greg Abbott said Texas has been the No. 1 state for business every year he’s been governor, but that comes from one magazine’s ranking. Other well-respected sources have Texas ranked lower. Typical of PolitiFact. They hunt for liberal sources to use as ammunition to feed their preconceived bias'. More importantly - Texas ranks 47th for employees!!! GovAbbott always focuses on companies and NOT his constituents. Politifact attacks conservatives again in efforts to affect elections. PF consistently avoids fact checking its media allies' daily media misinformation.
