MacKenzie Gore played catch and ran in the outfield Saturday morning and then walked to the grass behind the pitcher’s mound at Oracle Park. He looked up into the stands and turned almost all the way around with his eyes on the field before stepping on the mound for a few seconds and peering into toward home plate and looking up at the stands again. He wanted to at least have experienced the view before making his first start here Sunday.
“With Clev, we’re trying to be a little bit careful with him,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We‘re also able to do some things a little bit differently with Gore down the road like we did with his last outing, but just with Clev, give him an extra day. And Gore has been really good.”It is almost certain Gore will be back in the “piggyback” role at some point — both due to the Padres’ roster configuration and the need to limit his workload.
Gore said he does feel “less sore” after throwing just 40 pitches in that outing against the Phillies. The 23-year-old left-hander has a 2.17 ERA in 29 innings. That includes a 2.42 ERA in five starts.
