Top Senate Republicans said the GOP may line up against any effort to raise the government’s borrowing limit this year. The limit kicks in again next month at roughly $28.5 trillion.

WASHINGTON—Top Senate Republicans said the GOP may line up against any effort to raise the government’s borrowing limit this year, adding to the uncertainty surrounding how Congress will address the issue after the limit is reinstated next month.

Senate Minority Whip John Thune said at a press conference Wednesday that Democratic plans to advance President Biden’s $4 trillion agenda could prompt Republicans to oppose a debt-limit increase, echoing comments Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made earlier to the media outlet Punchbowl News.

“I don’t think there’s a single Republican senator who views increasing the debt limit so that Democrats can expand government and spend massive amounts as something they in the end would want to support,” Mr. Thune said. The Republican comments drew criticism from Democrats, who cast them as a hypocritical ploy that could trouble financial markets. While debt has soared since the start of the pandemic, deficits were rising for several years before that, in part because of two bipartisan budget deals that lifted government spending, and the 2017 GOP tax cuts, which constrained federal revenue.

“We have Covid debt, we have Trump debt, we’ve got a double standard, and we want to make it clear nobody is going to hold the American economy hostage, period, full stop,” said Sen. Ron Wyden .

Guns aren't dangerous. The government is.

TIME TO SHUTDOWN & DOWNSIZE the BLOATED BUREAUCRACY.

The party of 'no' sure seem to think it 'knows' what it is doing. 2022 is just around the corner. Every meaningful bill that will pass will be without one Trumpican vote. Pretty risky strategy if they are looking to expand their base.

You mean the debt ceiling they say didn't exist from 2016-2020? Gotcha 👍

maybe they shouldn't have cut taxes then

But trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy didn’t damage the financial stability? Raise rates on the wealthy and get rid of the codes that allow income to be sheltered! The wealthy might then pay their fair share.

Total obstructionist

Rescind the $2 trillion GOPTaxScam. Problem solved. GOP

Chuck* ThAt like getting more credit cards when you’re broke claiming it’s going to improve your credit They shouldn’t raise the debt ceiling, but to be fair, it is incredibly hypocritical that they had no qualms about it when Trump was in office. It was wrong then and it is wrong now. Funny how they only do the right thing when they lose.
