SAN ANTONIO — For the first time since 2019, Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston organized an in-person ceremony Sunday for National Gold Star Mothers and Families Day, inviting families who lost loved ones in service with the armed forces.

Carla Sizer, a Gold Star mother, drew tears while speaking of her son, Spc. Dane R. Balcon, who was 19 when he was killed in Iraq in 2007. That was 15 years ago but the grief is enduring, Sizer said, and is especially acute in September, the month when she drove onto her street and saw the “white van and two Army soldiers standing in my driveway.”Larina Williams holds her daughter, Ava, during a ceremony for Gold Star Mothers and Families at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston on Sunday.

Mary Rose and Ronald Johnson, parents of Benjamin Franklin Johnson, who died in Frieberg, Germany in 1997 at 21, were there to honor their son, too. They host a monthly local support group with Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors to help comfort others who have been through loss.
