San Antonio Paralympian Jen Lee, an Iraq veteran who played with the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team, appealed for help to recover the three gold medals he won after a man stole them from his car last weekend. Police Chief Bill McManus said Sunday they had been found.San Antonio Paralympian Jen Lee appealed to the community over the weekend to help recover three gold medals he won that were stolen Saturday by a man who smashed into his car.
Lee, 35, said he was dumbfounded by the theft, realizing too late that he should have placed the packpack in the trunk. An Army veteran, he rose from specialist to sergeant while serving in Tikrit and Kirkuk, Iraq, as the insurrection against U.S. forces exploded in 2006-07. He lost his right leg above the knee in a March 2009 motorcycle accident while riding on Interstate 95 in Jacksonville, Fla.
Losing those medals, even if for a weekend, was painful to Lee, but it’s only one of several blows he’s endured. Before the Beijng games, he was hit by a drunken motorist while driving home from Houston. He suffered a concussion and whiplash, and had to undergo chiropractic treatment. Just as the car break-in occurred, Lee was planning to fly to Taiwan and see his dad, who is recovering from surgery.
