The nationwide lockdown to slow coronavirus is still in its early days for much of Italy, but Italians are already showing signs of solidarity.A girl and her dog look out from a window during one of the many flash mobs taking place in Rome, on Sunday.

Italian officials have expressed concern that the surge in infections has pushed the country's health system to the saturation point, according to NPR's Sylvia Poggioli. Health authorities say there is a severe lack of intensive care unit beds, ventilators and protective masks to treat the huge influx.

The disease first appeared in Lombardy, the region that is home to Milan, a metropolis of 3 million people that is Italy's economic powerhouse. It started in a cluster of small-to-medium-sized towns in the region and Poggioli reports that"everything is being done to prevent a surge in cases in Milan.

Where did you get that Canada got 68 deaths? As far as I know, there was only one death in B.C.

In Germany, the incidence rate rose in the meantime. But the number of deaths is still below 20 according to the Robert Koch Institute.

Daily change rates and growth rate is more important than the actual number. We need to know if we passed the cusp.

Overreaction

22,000 deaths from the flu this year with the highest numbers of pediatric deaths in the last decade, not news. 6,000 people die worldwide in same time span from a different flu? Panic Fear Horror Extinction

Hundreds of thousands of people all over the world died from the Swine Flu or H1N1... How come you didn't cause mass panic then?

There will be at least a million dead worldwide before this is done, perhaps more. The statistical models point to that.

4%?

That’s a 4% mortality rate. Yikes.

you're missing guatemala and honduras, both have cases

Pretty sure the Canadian deaths reported in this article is off by a lot.

Keep in mind the US has 330 m people, Germany has 80 m people, look up Iran, Italy, etc. keep perspective when seeing numbers like this. No disrespect, Im a huge NPR fan, but look at %'s. Keep calm and carry on, Churchill had a point.

2 million children die each year from these type viruses.

That’s a 4 percent mortality rate, folks.

Confirmed 150,000unconfirmed probably 1000X that

I don’t believe the number of deaths reported in South Africa is correct. Please confirm.

7 billion people. Something is not adding up here.
