When Glennda Testone reflects on her time as Executive Director of New York City’s LGBTQ community center, the chief word that comes to mind is gratitude. She is grateful for the work she gets to do to help change queer people’s lives, and she is also grateful for the activists who came before her that have made her work possible. “Running a social change organization has been a tremendous honor for me,” she says. “I feel a huge responsibility to do as much as I can for the community.

Being an Executive Director, she says, is a mix of terrifying and exhilarating. She likens it to being a parent. “You’re just doing your best. You don’t know if it’s the right thing. You hope it is and just keep going.” She is also excited about the Center’s new digital monument, Stonewall Forever, created in partnership with Google. Stonewall Forever is an interactive online experience that celebrates those who fought for LGBTQ rights during the Stonewall Uprising. “Being able to elevate unknown heroes and stories,” Testone says, “and also allowing people to connect with that and tell their own stories and continue to make history is something that will live forever, and I feel really proud of that.
