GIRLS PREP TRACK/FIELD: Houston Academy girls in first going into final day at state championships

DAVID MUNDEE Sparked by a Macauley Flanagan gold medal and second place finishes from Katie Langford and Brianna Hart, the Houston Academy girls team seized the lead after the first day of the AHSAA Class 3A Outdoor State Track and Field Championships in Cullman on Friday.

Langford’s time was also better than her 1:00.25 time of a year ago. Northside Methodist was sparked by Mills, who earned a gold medal in the javelin with a throw of 140 feet, 5 inches to go with her third-place performance in the 400. Abby Grace Alexander added an eighth-place finish in the shot put after a throw of 31 feet, 3 inches.

Pike County’s D’Yana Knox tied for third in the high jump behind Opp’s Phillips and Weaver’s Carter with a leap of 4 feet, 8 inches. Kaylin Jackson finished sixth in the long jump with a 15’4 ¾” jump. The efforts helped Houston County to a ninth-place tie with three other teams with nine points after nine events.Eutsey places for Barbour County: Barbour County’s Anesia Eutsey earned a fourth-place finish in the shot put, giving the Jaguars five points and a 17th-place finish after day one.Providence Christian relay shines: At the Class 4A state meet in Gulf Shores, the Providence Christian 4x800-relay team earned a third-place finish on Friday, recording a time of 10 minutes and 10.
