Gillibrand proposes legislation to address nationwide shortage of long-term care workers

Wed, April 17th 2024 at 4:04 PMThere's a renewed call in the nation's capitol to fight the critical shortage of long-term care workers and home health aides.

Wednesday, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand proposed new legislation that would address the shortage using federal funds, which would strengthen and expand the workforce in both high-traffic and underserved areas. She says low wages, understaffing and poor working conditions are some of the main reasons behind the issue, which has resulted in many seniors having to wait extended periods of time to get the assistance they need.

"According to recent polls of aging service providers, 92 percent of nursing home operators and nearly 70 percent of assisted living providers reported significant or severe workforce shortages," Gillibrand said Wednesday. "As a result, many patients end up spending months, even years waiting for proper accommodation."

The shortage has also impacted local hospitals, leading to overcrowding in emergency rooms due to a shortage in beds.
