The Giants hosted Washington on Sunday.

had leaned on their defense all afternoon on Sunday, and now they needed one more stop, one more effort to keep theCommanders quarterback Sam Howell ran out of the pocket, away from the blitzing Isaiah Simmons, and flicked a pass toward wide receiver Jahan Dotson, near the goal line, where Jason Pinnock covered. The ball went off Dotson’s hand and fell incomplete, on what would’ve been a tough catch.

The Commanders got the ball back — after a Saquon Barkley fumble — on their own 8-yard line with 7:46 left in the game, trailing 14-7. Washington’s only touchdown to that point came on a 21-yard drive after Sterling Shepard muffed a punt. Surely, this Howell-led offense couldn’t march 92 yards for the game-tying touchdown. Right? But as this drive progressed, you had to wonder.

The Giants had a chance to seal the game on the Washington drive before that. But Kayvon Thibodeaux dropped an easy interception — and potential pick six — at Washington’s 15-yard line, with 3:57 left in the third quarter. Thibodeaux held his hands over his face mask in disbelief. The Giants’ defense also owned Howell in the first half, after which the Giants led 14-0. He looked lost against Wink Martindale’s blitz-heavy approach. He had been sacked an NFL-high 34 times in six games coming in. The Giants hit him seven times in the first half, including five sacks, as he completed 5 of 14 passes for 60 yards, one interception, and a 19.9 quarterback rating. Washington managed two first downs and 46 yards.

In Week 4, the Giants’ defense held Seattle to 17 points and 281 yards. In Week 5, the Dolphins hung 31 points and 524 yards on Martindale’s group, so it’s not like they played well. But they did have three takeaways, including a pick six — flashes of potential. And last week in Buffalo, the Bills managed just 14 points and 297 yards. The Giants had two more takeaways in that game.
