A new study from an international team of researchers, and involving some detailed computer simulations, has linked the blobs to a reduction in aerosol emissions in China – so a policy designed toThe reason is that these tiny airborne particles released by factories and power plants do a very good job at reflecting sunlight back into space, and keeping our atmosphere cooler.

Here, the researchers used existing climate models to predict heat in the Pacific Ocean, using different values for China emissions to compare the consequences. The models that matched the real-world emission reductions showed hotspots in the northeastern Pacific, where the blobs

Atmospheric 'teleconnections' sustain warm blobs in the northeast Pacific OceanThe past 10 years have seen a series of 'warm blobs' in the northeast Pacific Ocean. These marine heat waves do widespread damage to ecosystems and marine life in the area, but the mechanisms by which they develop and are sustained are still uncertain.

Computer models suggest modern plate tectonics are due to blobs left behind by cosmic collisionA small team of geologists and seismologists at the California Institute of Technology has found evidence via computer modeling that suggest giant blobs of material near the Earth's core, believed to have been created by a cosmic collision 4.5 billion years ago, may be responsible for modern plate tectonics.
