Gianni Infantino hailed the 2022 World Cup for having “the best group stage of a FIFA World Cup ever,” celebrating the final tournament in the current format before the World Cup expands to 48 teams in 2026.

There appeared to be a growing consensus that FIFA was leaning toward featuring 16 groups of three teams at the 2026 World Cup, with the top two finishers advancing to the Round of 32.

The problem is that with three teams in each group, one team would be idle during the final group stage match, leaving open the potential that a given result would see both teams through and opening a real possibility of collusion — not unlike the infamous FIFA could be rethinking that approach , with other possibilities now including two separate 24-team tournaments that would see one team emerge from each half to meet in the final. There is also the potential of 12 groups of four teams, with the top two in each group plus the eight top third-place teams advancing to the last 32.

All of these options have their challenges though, meaning the group stage at the World Cup will never quite be the same.

48 teams, what a fiasco that’ll be. It’s all about the money.
