Germany is working 'every day' towards being able to ban Russian energy, the economy minister said on Monday, while a prominent regional leader said Berlin could speed up the process by ending its opposition to nuclear power.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck was asked in a government news conference whether civilian deaths in Ukraine would prompt Germany to back a ban on Russia's energy."We are working every day to create the preconditions and the steps toward an embargo," he said, adding that this approach "harms Putin daily".

Markus Soeder, premier of the wealthy state of Bavaria, criticised the government for what he said was an ideological focus on switching only to wind and solar.
