Martha Raddatz takes a closer look at the military's renaming of bases named for Confederate generals.STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A park near Atlanta with a giant carving of Confederate leaders would publicly acknowledge that it was a gathering spot for the Ku Klux Klan, relocate Confederate flags and remove the carving from its logo under proposals unveiled Monday to address criticism of its Confederate legacy.
The proposals come amid a national reckoning on race that brought down dozens of Confederate monuments in a span of weeks last year. Some speakers at Monday's meeting said the changes before the board didn't go far enough. “You, this board, have the responsibility to the citizens of the state of Georgia — all the citizens of Georgia — to do what’s right right now," he said. “You have the authority, you have the ability, you have the obligation to remove these symbols without delay.”
Martin O'Toole, an attorney, said the law requires that Stone Mountain serve as a memorial to the Confederacy.
Why is History pushing Slave ownership as the sole cause of the war. The Southerners are still too different, culturally, to be part of a Union with Yankees. The Union needs to be split up. Let the Gun totin South have a separate country. Have a parlay and decide the division.
Knock that bullshit down.
Look at Stone Mountain as a marvel of engineering. I’ve been to the sculpture and it’s breathtaking how huge it is. Forget about The Confederacy and focus on the feat of cutting something so big that a car can sit on the horses back.
I’m here only for the triggered looney left comments
It needs to be blasted away from the surface. If you want to remember racism, go watch a video or read a book.
What's next? Removing Civil War burial grounds? Burning library history books? Ridding the 1st Amendment? How far is too far? Midterm elections.
