NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch, which will likely remain in place through the weekend. It's expected that blobs of plasma ejected by the sun could impact power grids and satellites.An especially active area of the sun has been producing substantial coronal mass ejections over the past few days, and they happen to be oriented right at Earth.
On the upside, the storms can also produce amazing aurora, which could be seen as far south as Northern California.
