Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, says calls to China about Trump after Jan. 6 were 'routine'

Milley said the calls, which reportedly contained assurances the U.S. would not attack China or would warn it if there were any plans to do so, were “routine” and intended “to reassure both allies and adversaries in this case in order to ensure strategic ability.”

He said he will go “into any level of detail Congress wants to get into” when he is set to testify to the Senate on September 28. Milley is slated to testify later this month before the Senate Armed Services Committee about his perspective on the U.S.’s Afghanistan withdrawal. However, the phone calls to China will likely become a central focus of the hearing.

reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa first detailed the two calls. According to the book, Milley assured his Chinese counterpart in the calls that “the American government is stable and everything is going to be okay.” He reportedly told Gen. Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army, “we are not going to attack or conduct any kinetic operations against you” and “if we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time … It’s not going to be a surprise.

Milley: Calls to China were 'perfectly' within scope of jobTop U.S. military officer, Gen. Milley, says that calls he made to his Chinese counterpart in the final months of Trump’s presidency were “perfectly within the duties and responsibilities” of his job. Absolutely. You can't act like whistleblower Edward Snowden while head of the US defense system. Do you want your enemy to fully prepared before you hit them, so they can hit you so badly and you lose 1000s of your men and women in service? He probably told his Chinese counterpart that the US is no longer blaming China for the COVID virus origin either.
