Petraeus said the Taliban's advances had shown that the decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan was"a serious mistake."
"Whether it is the Taliban taking over the country or it's the kind of civil war that we saw in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet, post-Soviet government, there are no good outcomes here. In fact, there's nothing more than horrible outcomes unless we are willing to acknowledge that this is not going as apparently the more optimistic projections laid out, and then take stock of the situation and re-examine what we could do.
But he noted:"Remember what happened when Syria melted down? We used to describe it as a 'geopolitical Chernobyl', the meltdown of a country that spewed violence, extremism, instability and a tsunami of refugees."He said:"In this case, the results cannot be sugar-coated... there was a saying that we occasionally used for really bad days and I said, look if it's a really bad day in Baghdad or Kabul, just go out to the podium and say we had a terrible day.
Is catastrophe worse in the short term or worse in continued military and financial support until the end of time?davidpetraeus were you not cognizant of the fact afghan military not up to the task and pols absolutely corrupt?
Blacks are the least vaccinated by percentage of population. That can be blamed on one of their own, VP Kamala Harris who refused the vaccine approved by Trump admin. Many Dems lie about being vaccinated, which is why 6 law makers tested positive after flying unmasked to DC.
He was a discredit to his uniform. Close to a traitor.
Like sharing classified intel with your mistress?
Wrong David! The decision to go in on the ground, occupy, and then try to build a liberal democracy was 'a serious mistake.'
Who was it who began the drawdown? Hm?
We were going to be Slaughtered, Gerneral.
He would say the same thing if the withdrawal would have been in 5 years 🤷🏻♂️
Not mistake, its up to Afghan people make decisions and battle for own future US mistakes start 1989 with CIA operation Cyclone-by training and arming Afghan Guerrillas Us must fix own problems with Human and Physical infrastructure, broken Democracy
I think the world knows why any foreign power wants to play in Afghanistan it’s about selling weapons and keeping the military out of mischief. No one ever cared about the Afghanis. Protection never builds courageous leaders.
No it wasn’t. If the Afghan people want to escape taliban rule they will fight for it. We are not babysitters.
Owned by the military industrial complex!
A much bigger mistake was putting Petraeus in any position of command.
Staying at Afghanistan after beating El Qaida was the strategic/political mistake. No other low level successes could repair this. The US can't decide who to govern Afghanistan.
Speaking of serious mistakes . . .
Wow wait till he hears about Iraq The truth is Afghanistan was under control till the day Iraq was invaded on concocted evidence meaning that was the end of the chance for a modern Afghanistan
Even more serious mistake was us being there in the first place.
Oh, THIS Petraeus?
And he did such a great job that after 20 years we were no closer to stability than we were when we started. I don’t really care what his opinions are
Trump strikes again. He conned Biden to follow his decision to leave afghanistan.
Wait the commander of an illegal war in Iraq based on lies that killed 5000 of our guys for no reason thinks that endless war in Afghanistan is a fantastic idea? I did not see that insightful opinion coming 🙄
