Batagaika’s enormous growth over the years is the result of the thawing of the permafrost below.

A collaborative effort from researchers in Germany and Russia has found that the Batagaika Crater in Siberia, also known as the Gateway to Hell, is expanding at 35 million cubic feet yearly.

When it rains and no external drainage is available, the water goes into the subsurface and dissolves the rock. The land on top remains intact for a while until the underground space gets too big, and then the collapse begins. The term crater used for this ground formation is a bit of a misnomer since Batagaika is more of a thermokarst depression in the mountainous region. Thermokarst is the name given to terrains with irregular surfaces consisting of mounds and hollows caused by the melting permafrost below.

Using high-resolution remote sensing using satellites and drones, geological structure modeling, and field data, research teams belonging to institutes in Germany and Russia have determined that the total volume loss from Batagaika is 35 million cubic feet per year.
