Millions of Americans who rely on their cars for work are changing their habits, signing up for carpools or even ditching their cars for bicycles as gas prices recently hit $5 per gallon for the first time ever.

In a normal summer, Orvilia Nieto might do some traveling in the RV she lives in in Lytle, Texas. But that might not happen this year. She is struggling to fill the tank of her 2008 Ford Expedition SUV so she can get to her job at a T.J. Maxx distribution center in San Antonio, about 20 miles away.

Jill Chapman, a senior performance consultant with Insperity, a Texas-based human resources and recruitment company, said gas prices and commute lengths are increasingly a sticking point with job candidates. Chapman said companies may want to consider temporary bonuses, incentives for public transit or gas cards to help their employees.

“This is an unwelcome development for those companies that are trying to get people back to the office,” Lewis said. “It is one more reasonable reason why those employees are pushing back.” For those who must commute, there can be options. On Tuesday, Uber announced it was bringing back discounted shared rides in nine U.S. cities this summer, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Organizations that link carpoolers — like one run by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments in the Detroit area — say they are seeing significantly more participants.

RTD this is the time to bring back the C Line! Maybe a plan that allows the C and D lines could alternate or run the lines to coincide with work schedules. Also add C Line for downtown Denver events. At least survey the southwest/Littleton/Highlands Ranch areas

America's incoherent approach to dealing with high gas pricesThe central problem is too much demand for fuel and too little supply. But many of the policy ideas being floated to address high gas prices don't wrestle with that basic disconnect and may be counterproductive. Hmmm… Wonder why there’s little supply? Yep, I saw people filling up their two tanks, and traveling to work 4 times per day. They traveled multiple vacations … Consumers are greedy , the eat gas for breakfast, lunch and diner. Gas /oil companies are poor don’t have access to resources. We must punish consumer. Just stop! It’s not too much demand with too little supply. The price per barrel today is equivalent to what it was in 2014 and the cost of gas is 25% higher. It’s profiteering. Plain and simple.
