Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations & Cloud Strategies Conference, Day 3 Highlights

Gartner research shows that designing an automation strategy to adapt to change is fundamental, and a strong set of metrics that can demonstrate the effect of change can help tell the organization's automation story. “When developing your automation metrics, start with measures of operational efficiency. The reduction of toil in the I&O workforce is an inward-looking measure of success, but the returns are direct, easy to understand, and easy to communicate.”

Tony Harvey, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, discussed server, storage and networking infrastructure sustainability at the Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations Management & Cloud Strategies Conference in Las Vegas. “Oversizing is probably the biggest enemy of sustainability. Buying the biggest, most powerful piece of hardware just because we have the budget isn’t the way forward.”

“At the data center level, one of the biggest power consumers is the air conditioning. Using the cold air effectively via hot aisle/cold aisle designs is one of the most important things we can do to increase energy efficiency.”
