Attorney General Merrick Garland strongly defended recent Justice Department moves that appeared to give legal cover to former President Donald Trump and his appointees

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday strongly defended recent Justice Department moves that appeared to give legal cover to former President Donald Trump and his appointees.

“The fundamental rule of a democracy, or a republic, or a republican democracy, and the essence of the rule of law … is that like case be treated alike, that there not be one rule for Democrats and another for Republicans, that there not be one rule for friends and another for foes,” Garland told the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee.

Garland said the decisions to defend cases involving the prior administration were “not always easy.” “We have reversed policies of the previous administration many times over the last three months,” the attorney general said. “We have initiated our own policies.” Garland asserted that each recent administration added new protections for journalists, although there is no indication the Trump administration did so. The attorney general addressed the issue in response to a question from Sen. Jeanne Shaheen , who noted that reporters for several news organizations were notified in recent weeks that their phone and email information was sought, and in some cases obtained, during leak probes.

It's protection of the Office of the President; not the individual occupying the position. Could it stand to be revised idk!

There's nothing to defend. These protections are intuitional protections w/n you like or agree w/them. It's the same reason I have serious concerns about efforts to prosecute Trump. Ain't no fun when the rabbit got the gun. What he should say is that we won't open Pandora's box.

Obama SCOTUS Garland? 2 party’s 1 cup.

After 4 years of Trump and Barr, the windows of DOJ need to be thrown open to get rid of the stench of corruption and autocracy. I hoped Garland would be the person to step up and clean out DOJ. Now I worry he is following in Barr's footsteps.

Lol

Please Merrick Garland, don’t disappoint me like Mueller did.

I'm done with him now.🤨

“The job of a Justice Department in making decisions of law is not to back any administration, previous or present,' Garland said of recent criticism of DoJ actions backing Trump

Why Is Merrick Garland Defending Donald Trump? Is there any limit to what Garland will allow Trump to get away with? All I can say is, he is lucky he is not defending Hillary under Trump’s administration. This is so bizarre. What ever happened regarding obtaining Trump’s DNA? Garland has been very disappointing so far as AG.

Biden's Department of Justice Is Still Taking Trump's Side in E. Jean Carroll CaseIt came as little surprise last year when it was reported that the Department of Justice was seeking to take over Trump’s defense in his legal battle with E. Jean Carroll, the former Elle columnist who is suing him for defamation—Trump was still president. At the time, the DOJ argued Trump was “within the scope” of his presidential office when he denied Carroll’s rape allegations. This is lame POTUS I know that we can do better. Happy birthday to beautiful Dr. Jill Biden.
