Top-ranked Canyon looks to remain undefeated.

The Chargers, listed No. 9 in the Express-News Sub-5A rankings, bounced back from a 35-27 loss against Eagle Pass with a 44-36 victory against Canyon Lake last week. Champion held a 37-6 halftime lead in cruising to the win.The top-ranked Couguars are off to their best start since 2011. The Cougars defeated New Braunfels, 35-32, to win the Wurst Bowl for the first time since 2013, snapping a seven-game losing streak in the series.

Quarterback Deuce Adams is the area’s Class 5A passing leader with 907 yards and 11 touchdowns. He passed for 304 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 70 yards on 17 carries against the Unicorns. Cougars receiver Xavion Noland is the area’s leader receiver with 409 yards and five touchdowns on 21 receptions. He had six catches for 137 yards and two scores last week.This is the first of what should be several marquee match-up in District 12-5A-I. In addition to Canyon and Champion, there are two others in the Express-News’ Sub-6A rankings including No. 2 Smithson Valley and No. 8 Seguin .
