LONDON — The British government was accused of bringing the country to the brink of a constitutional crisis Wednesday after widespread reports that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is preparing to ask Queen Elizabeth II to suspend Parliament.
Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson speaks during a news conference at the end of the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, Aug. 26, 2019.lawmaker Ben Bradshaw called the move"a coup, plain and simple, against our parliamentary democracy."Nicola Sturgeon, the leader of the Scottish Parliament, said that"today will go down in history as a dark one indeed for U.K. democracy" if Johnson went through with the move.
Next week was already set for a showdown between the prime minister and the House of Commons, which is currently on recess. Suspending Parliament would reduce the amount of working days before Oct. 31, the deadline when Britain is official set to exit the E.U. The Institute for Government think tank says that suspending Parliament in this way, officially known as"proroguing Parliament" would be"undemocratic" and"a deeply troubling precedent to set."
KatyTurNBC Johnson is trying to be Trump-lite and failing miserably.
KatyTurNBC Kinda sucks when your constitution is air.
KatyTurNBC Hard Brexit will fuel a financial crisis in the eurozone, which will spark a global financial crisis given the run-up in corporate debt globally. CONTAGION
KatyTurNBC Had anyone seen Boris Johnson and Gary Busey together at the same time?🤔🤔
KatyTurNBC the british trump thinks that the british people and the queen elizabeth are dumb, but the british people don't permit that her democracy makes a crack!
KatyTurNBC I hope she turn down his request!
AmoneyResists They have their own Trump now. Let’s see how proper the royals tread on that madness.
I’m more surprised the queen has any duties at all.
I was thinking about this myself. Since Britain's democracy is split evenly in two over Brexit, they might need to go to the Queen to break the impasse.
So PM who received how many votes as PM in last election decides for PM 'I dont like this. Gonna dump it'. Then wonders why people say he is reckless? Wait a minute they dont have elections for PM? Oh I remember. 003% of England represented by Neo Conservative swine did.
Past. Past the brink.
Gee.. how come no one thought about that easy solution , hmm.
Told ya.
This could potentially be the biggest constitutional crisis HM has faced during her long reign. Boris Johnson has always been regarded as reckless even within the Conservative Party.
People vote to leave the EU—Parliament works to stop the leaving=Parliament not representing the people=parliament has no business operating. If they don’t enact Brexit the British people reserve the right to revolt, and what comes to those who refused their will will come.
I remember that tactic was used in Germany in February of 1933.
There was a referendum and people voted to LEAVE. The only people stopping the democratic vote are the stupid MPs who will not deliver brexit
The UK has it's own Donald Trump 😂😂 you can call them the kray twins.👍👍
Dunno how we don’t have a constitution 😂
Me watching Brexit unfold
Well, if the US re-legalized the death penalty, she can still demand “off with his head.”
Putin's puppets are all in panic mode it seems. 🤨 Deutsche Bank
BorisJohnson is on it just for himself. He couldn't care less about the British people. Sad
