And it’s still hard to find some kinds of trees and plants once abundant on Temple University’s Ambler campus., knocking down trees and light poles, ripping roofs off buildings, and leaving more than $10 million in damage, the 187-acre campus that doubles as an arboretum has begun to rebuild and convert a weather disaster into a learning opportunity.A tornado caused millions of dollars in damage to Temple’s Ambler campus. Recovery could take decades.

“We’re educators, but for us, it’s been such a huge education ... ,” Salisbury said. “It has been really cool to learn all this and watch it and be surprised.” The opportunities also have drawn researchers from other schools, including Rutgers and the University of Pittsburgh. While there are nearly 40 public gardens in the Philadelphia region, the Ambler campus is the only one that offers a look at major post-tornado impact, Salisbury said.On Thursday, the one-year anniversary of the storm, the campus will hold a series of events to commemorate its recovery and mark its continued healing.
