? We turn to ourselves. For some girls, learning how to do their own hair was taught in the household watching parents cornrow siblings' hair or watching in the mirror as mom pressed our edges with a hot comb to later slick it up into a bun. Either way, hair is

embedded in the culture and during times like this, not knowing how to do your hair can feel frustrating because you’ve lost a sense of your identity . For a lot of black women having a fresh weave or newly braided cornrows can be a self-esteem booster, they feel back to “themselves.” It doesn’t mean we don’t love wearing our hair out, it means that our hair is an outlet of expression. Being stripped of hair salons doesn’t mean we have to be stripped of that expression, it just means we have to pivot.

We asked six hair savvy influencers to show us how they are styling their hair with quarantining. The diversity of the styles range from trying their hand at box braids to styling fun headwraps. They’ve grabbed their edge controls and their favorite stylers to keep their crowns together during this time. While they admit some things are left to hair professionals, they experimented with DIY styles thatBlack women have a special relationship with hair because it is vital to our appearance.

So anyone who knows me knows how serious I am about my hair, and I'm rarely without my weave. When this all began, like most people, I thought it'd be over almost immediately so I had no idea that I'd have to be caring for my own hair for so long. But if there's one thing about me, I'm going to figure it out. And I have been. For a little more than a month I had knotless braids that took me 10 hours to execute.
