Landen Walker pitched a complete-game, no-hitter Friday night as Baldwin County salvaged a doubleheader split with Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in the Class 6A quarterfinals.
Hillcrest scored two runs in the top of the first inning of the opener and never trailed. Jackson Henderson homered for the Patriots. Evan Williams, Noah Latham and Brooks Tunnell each had two hits. Sam Brown went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored for Central. Brody Stamp, Chris Kelly and Briggs Cameron also drove in two runs each. That production backed Wippert, who started and got the win. Stamp pitched the final 1.2.Braxton Taylor’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 2 gave Fairhope a doubleheader split at No. 3 Auburn.Taylor, Nolan Phillips and Blake Westry each drove in two runs in Game 2 for the Pirates .
The Toros will play either Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa or Baldwin County in the state semifinals next week. Those two teams split their doubleheader Friday. Spanish Fort is trying to return to the state finals for the second straight season.Lakelon Ray’s RBI double in the seventh gave Spanish Fort the lead for good. Brayden Cooper added a two-run double later in the inning. Ray was 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored. Andrew Salmon drove in two runs. Noah Golson had two hits for the Indians.
The fifth-ranked Wildcats advanced to the Class 4A semifinals with the 5-inning rout of North Jackson. North Jackson got off to a great start scoring 2 runs in the first inning, but Westminster tied the game in the bottom half, sending seven batters to the plate.North Jackson’s Carson Smith cut into the lead in the top of the fifth with a 2-run shot that left the Chiefs down 9-4, but Westminster ended the game early with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning. Caleb Goode’s laser shot to left brought in his brother, Josh Goode, and Friend to end the game 14-4.
Third-ranked Corner pounded 28 hits with 11 extra-base hits in the Thursday sweep of eighth-ranked Deshler. Game 2 was tied 4-all in the fourth before Corner scored 10 runs over the final three innings to complete the sweep.
