Fresh protests erupt as Hong Kong braces for annual rally to mark handover by a_roantree

HONG KONG - Hundreds of protesters faced off with riot police early on Monday, the anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese rule, ahead of an annual rally that is expected to draw huge crowds amid widespread anger over a controversial extradition bill.

The bill, which the government was forced to suspend after the largest and most violent protests in decades, has plunged the Asian financial center into political turmoil. Beijing denies interfering but, for many Hong Kong residents, the extradition bill is the latest step in a relentless march toward mainland control.

The uproar over the bill has reignited a protest movement that had lost steam after pro-democracy demonstrations in 2014 failed to force concessions from Beijing and led to the arrests of hundreds of activists. The South China Morning Post cited unidentified sources as saying about 5,000 riot police would be ready for any trouble.

Activists are also demanding the government drop charges against those arrested during the protests, charge police with what they describe as excessive use of force and stop referring to the demonstrations as a riot, a term that can bring a heavier jail sentence.Thousands of people rallied to back the police on Sunday in heavy rain and sweltering heat of around 33 degrees Celsius .

a_roantree I don't think HK police would be this violent.

a_roantree A display of true bravery and devotion to liberty.

a_roantree It looks like these people would rather be British than Chinese: Will the UK welcome them in their homes?

a_roantree Reuters' reporter must know how to take side, the safe one. Or they should thank HK police to cordon a safe zone for their perfect photos

SAGcoup What if the perceived handover was really a way to sort of wing-it? Where the handing over ceremony was presented by what Americans refer to as 'Indian Giver', and the gift was never a gift in the first place, but more like an Easter Egg, a surprise inside. Trojan style. Who are these Hong Kong politicians who proposed such a law?
