French Prosecutors Open War-Crimes Probe in Ukraine

French prosecutors said Tuesday they were investigating whether attacks occurred on civilians in Hostomel, a town adjacent to Bucha, near the capital of Kyiv. The prosecutors said they were also probing possible war crimes in the northern city of Chernihiv and the southern port of Mariupol, which has been besieged by Russian troops.

The prosecutors didn't name any suspects in their investigation. Prosecutors said French law allows them to conduct an investigation outside of French territory if a war crime targets French people or is committed by a French national or resident. Under French law, war crimes can range from deliberate attacks on civilians and the destruction of property to depriving a population of food, water and other essentials.

The Russian Defense Ministry has dismissed the reports of widespread killing of civilians in Bucha, calling them another provocation by the Ukrainian side. Moscow said no local residents suffered from violence while Bucha was under Russian control.
