The future of the shelter hangs in the balance after the province confirmed it will move all funded services to other organizations.

Social Services Minister Gene Makowsky announced on talk radio Thursday that the government would look to move services from the Lighthouse Supported Living Inc. to other organizations in the city after reports the shelter’s former executive director used shelter money for personal loans.

Jerome Hepfner, the shelter’s current co-managing director, wrote in an email Monday that he was still waiting for government to confirm details in writing. “We are in a fragile moment,” Clark said. “Any transition needs to result in a net improvement of services and supports to people who need them, as well as the overall safety and well-being of our community.”The Lighthouse is best known for its emergency shelter. But the Ministry of Social Services also funds the organization to provide an independent living program for 18 people with intellectual disabilities.
