As we approach another 9/11 anniversary, it’s important to remember the geopolitical lessons that day illuminated. We vowed to 'Never Forget' September 11,...

As foreign a thought as it may be to many Americans, there are many in the world who wish Americans harm. Whether we like it or not, the United States of America is a symbol to the rest of the world. It would be beyond the scope of this writing to discuss what that symbol is, why it is, or whether it’s fair, but suffice it to say that for many in the world, America evokes strong feelings.A subset of those who wish us harm comprises those who actively plan, prepare and train to do us harm.

This topic has been debated, analyzed and written about by many individuals more intelligent and more credentialed than myself. And I do not pretend to know the answer to the riddle about where to strike the appropriate balance. My purpose in raising the topic is to note that the inherent tension between freedom and security was brought to our attention in a dramatic way as a result of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
