Foundation Season 2 Will Determine Fate Of Future Asimov Spinoffs Like I, Robot & Galactic Empire

The success of Foundation season 2 will determine the fate of other Isaac Asimov adaptations, such as I, Robot and Galactic Empire. Based on the award-winning novels by Asimov, Foundation follows a group of exiles on their crucial journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire. But the Apple TV+ sci-fi series, which recently debuted season 2, represents only a portion of the interconnected stories that Asimov is famous for.

Goyer adresssed whether he'd liked to expand the Foundation universe so that it includes stories like I, Robot and the Galatic Empire saga. For the moment, Goyer is focused on Foundation season 2 and he says that any future Asimov adaptations depend on how audiences receive the current Apple TV+ series.

Anything is possible, right? If we're fortunate enough to go eight seasons, do I think we have 80 episodes worth of story to tell? Absolutely. Am I creating different off-ramps in case we don't get there for one reason or another? Absolutely, because I don't want to leave the audience hanging. But are there other stories that we would like to tell that don't fit within those 80 episodes? Yes, absolutely.

How Foundation Connects To I, Robot Foundation and I, Robot were initially separate, but in the Foundation's Edge novel, published in 1982, Asimov attempted to link several of his books into one shared universe. He went further in 1985's Robots and Empire, detailing how the characters of I, Robot continued into the seemingly robot-free world of Foundation.

As a result of this move, it was revealed that R. Daneel Olivaw, exists in secret throughout Foundation. This led to speculation about how Apple TV's adaptation may secretly set up other Asimov works as well. Based on Goyer's remarks, that is not the main goal of Foundation season 2. But if the show proves to be a hit and builds off its previous audience, it's likely that more adaptations will at least be seriously considered.
