Forty years on, New Zealand apologizes for Antarctic plane disaster

WELLINGTON - New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern apologized on Thursday for the then-government’s handling of a plane crash in Antarctica 40 years ago that took the lives of 257 people in the country’s worst peacetime disaster.

Most of the 237 passengers and 20 crew killed were New Zealanders but other nationalities included Americans, Canadians, Japanese and Australians. “After forty years, on behalf of today’s government, the time has come to apologize for the actions of an airline then in full state ownership; which ultimately caused the loss of the aircraft and the loss of those you loved,” Ardern said in her speech.

Better.late than never...

That's all well and good, but reality is they flew into a MOUNTAIN. Even if the nav was reprogrammed, instruments and visual flight parameters should have prevented it. But whatever, if it makes you feel better.

These politicians disgust me... Like they spend most of their time looking for reasons to be sorry.

Like all of these weasel apologies, they are too late and do nothing to help the victims and very little to assuage the anguish of the families. They are in effect a sound bite designed to enhance the politician's reputation.

Not buying it unless Ardern dresses up like a penguin for the rest of the year.
