Winston Groom, author of 'Forrest Gump' book that became a pop movie sensation, has died in Alabama, mayor and funeral home say.

FILE - In this April 29, 2016, file photo, "Forrest Gump" author Winston Groom speaks to students at Jinks Middle School in Panama City, Fla. Groom, the author of the novel "Forrest Gump" that was made into a six-Oscar winning 1994 movie that became a soaring pop culture hit, has died, an Alabama official close to the writer said Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020. He was 77.

Mayor Karin Wilson of Fairhope, Alabama, said in a message posted on social media that Groom had died in that south Alabama town. The death was confirmed by a local funeral home, which said arrangements were pending. “Forrest Gump” was the improbable tale of a slow-witted man who was a participant or witness to key points of 20th Century history — from Alabama segregationist Gov. George Wallace’s “stand at the schoolhouse door,” to meetings with presidents. Stars including Tom Hanks gained in popularity through the acclaim the movie and their performances received.

I've not read the book, but I love the movie. I honestly sometimes use the movie to help me in life. I think it's about stoicism, and keeping your eye on the ball.

Amazing story of the societal transition in the middle of the American century.

Well, we all have to go at home. While I didn’t read the book, I terribly enjoyed the movie, several times over. I hope since he wrote the book, enjoyed the financial royalties, that LIFE WAS LIKE A BOWL OF CHERRIES 🍒! R.I.P.

Sad. Great story.

In the book, Forrest fought everyone instead of being a jogger. Very different.
