Seven-term Republican Sen. Thad Cochran, who steered billions of dollars to his home state of Mississippi, has died at 81.

FILE - In this Aug. 24, 2005, file photo, U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., speaks to a reporter in Jackson, Miss. Seven-term Republican Sen. Thad Cochran, who used seniority to steer billions of dollars to his home state of Mississippi, died Thursday, May 30, 2019. He was 81.

“I’ve never known a more powerful man, nor a more humble man — a true Southern gentleman that loved the great state of Mississippi,” White said. “Thad Cochran was a giant in the United States Senate and one of the greatest champions Mississippi has ever known,” said Wicker, who was elected to the U.S. House in 1994 and has served in the Senate since 2007.

GOP leaders banned earmarking, but Cochran backed Navy shipbuilding efforts in 2015. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, which makes Navy ships, has long been one of Mississippi’s largest private employers. Weeks after four men were arrested and charged in the photo case, Cochran placed second, behind McDaniel, in a three-person Republican primary. During the three-week runoff campaign, Cochran sought support from a wide variety of voters, including African Americans who traditionally vote for Democrats.

Rose Cochran died in December 2014, weeks after the election and before her husband was sworn in for his seventh six-year term in the Senate.During his second stint as Appropriations Committee chairman starting in 2015, Cochran continued working to send money to Mississippi. He and Wicker successfully pushed to get a national historic landmark designation for the home of Medgar Evers, the Mississippi NAACP leader who was assassinated in 1963 outside the house in Jackson.

good riddance to bad rubbish

and did nothing with it... amd probably embezzled a lot and probably helped his friends gain inflated contracts

Your bias is showing

And it’s still a shithole. I don’t get why anyone lives there

Why does That state gets treated so poorly.

Yay another old white senator has died!! Good news for America!!

And where did it all go?

One down, the rest to go.

I do not like this headline, which is negatively connoted... let this Senator and his family grieve respectfully with the recognition his 40+ years of service deserve.

A great example of why we need term limits.

Other than billions of dollars stolen from donor blue states, what a single constructive thing has this man done for the US? I challenge AP to name one!

What’s the “Steering” part all about...that’s WHY Senators are elected to represent his State! Taking care of the people! It’s a lost art...seems some Senators now just relentlessly toss out political attacks! RIP SEN. Cochran, you fought well

Billions of dollars in 7 terms and Mississippi still has such a low quality of life. Misspent money.

You guys are awful. Have you ever politicized a Democrat who died with your “Breaking News” alerts? Did you mention Robert Byrd’s former Klan affiliation with your “Breaking News” alert when he died. How about reporting the news without the bias? What a concept!

Term Limits & complete financial disclosure is the only answer.

Who’s pockets?

Good to see the state went from a backwards hellhole to....oh

And nothing of value was lost.

Billions of dollars later, what do we have? A state that wants to eliminate women's right to health. They probably even want to ban women and minorities from voting.

Good riddance

What'd they do with the money? The state is last in education.
