Former San Francisco Police Commander Steven Ford was sworn in Wednesday as Antioch’s new interim police chief, the first leader from the outside in more than 11 years.
“I want to emphasize that we’ve never been here as a city before – nor has any city in California – where the mayor, the city manager, the city attorney, and now our chief of police – happen to be African-American men defying every stereotype that is out there about us,” Thorpe said. “Today marks a new day for the Antioch police department and for our city,” Thorpe said. “Chief Ford is Mr. Police Reform and I look forward to his leadership and getting us past our small divisions and toward a collective and shared vision for our future as a city.”
“Well, here I am faced with this incredible opportunity to positively influence this organization and to pass on what I deem important – 21st century policing policies, strategies, philosophies and practices of procedural justice and to be a catalyst for positive change,” he said.
