ARLINGTON – Former Ranger Drew Robinson, who became a leading voice throughout baseball for mental health after surviving a suicide attempt, threw out a first...

Drew Robinson, who became a leading voice throughout baseball for mental health after surviving a suicide attempt, threw out a first pitch before Tuesday’s game.

Accompanied by his Goldendoodle service dog Ellie, Robinson addressed a group of youngsters from the Rangers’ West Dallas youth academy before the game. Robinson, 30, is currently a mental health consultant for the San Francisco Giants. He recently started a foundation, the Better Universe Foundation, to help reinforce the need for mental health awareness.

“For kids, I try it to keep it simple,” said Robinson, who lost an eye to the 2020 suicide attempt. “I just try to remind them of the importance of talking. Even if they don’t really hear me in the moment, maybe next year, when their first girlfriend breaks ups with them or when something bad happens to a pet, they will remember that guy with the dog saying something to them about [mental health].

“I almost brag about going to therapy,” he added. “It’s a passion of mine. Getting rid of the hesitation to talk about out is important. Therapy is a preventative thing. It’s not only for crisis or emergency. If you get to that point, you are usually already too overwhelmed.”
