He was 52.

The ex-Penn State star running back, who played for the Houston Oilers, San Diego Chargers and New York Giants from 1991 to 1999, previously overcame multiple cancer bouts. He had Lynch Syndrome, a genetic disease that made him more susceptible to certain cancer types. “Gary Brown had a big heart partnered with a big smile and a big personality,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement. “His energy and spirit were infectious. He lit up every room he walked into and touched the lives of those who knew him in such a positive way. Everyone who knew him, loved him.

The statement was Jones’ second in four days following the death of a beloved member of the Cowboys family.
