Dallas Cowboys defensive tackles Randy White and Don Smerek attend practice at the Dallas Cowboys facility in Irving, Texas during the 1987 player strike. In seven seasons, he played 69 games and recorded 14 ½ sacks.“He was just solid as a football player and I can always count on him. He would come in on third downs and rush the passer and the thing about Don as a football player, he was 100 percent.
White said he talked Smerek out of retirement to play a few more years in the NFL. After Smerek retired in 1987, White tried to convince him to do speaking engagements because of his ability to tell good stories.“He would always be there,” White said. “A great teammate playing football and we became really great friends off the field. He used to be my fishing partner and we used to go fishing and all the things that go along with that.”Smerek was raised in Henderson, Nev.
“His teammates are lifelong friends, even going back to high school, college and NFL,” Smerek’s sister Debbie Nye said. “There’s still all of those people, were pretty much by his side. He was a larger-than-life individual, a very magnetic personality.”Smerek is survived by his wife, Tandi; three brothers, Jeff, Ron and Dennis; along with his sister, Debbie, and numerous nieces and nephews.. This is my 13th year covering the Dallas Cowboys.
