One of Mobile County’s leaders and public personalities during the COVID-19 pandemic was arrested late Thursday and booked into jail on drug-related charges following a brief police chase.
Mobile police reported that at around 10:35 p.m. on Thursday, officers attempted to stop a vehicle Chavers was allegedly driving on westbound Interstate 10 near Virginia Street in reference to leaving the scene of an accident. Chavers, an epidemiologist with the Mobile County Health Department, served as the head of the county’s COVID-19 response team for 11 months, from July 2020-May 2021. He was also one of the point people who provided social media updates about the virus during the height of the pandemic.
