and the Vera Institute of Justice that is working to transform prison culture by creating restorative housing units, starting with young adults. Life in a Restoring Promise housing unit reflects life outside of prison as much as possible, so that people can thrive when they return to their communities. In Restoring Promise units, older incarcerated people act as mentors to coach young adults, who take classes on financial literacy, conflict mediation, and other life skills.

“I saw the change from the very beginning,” said Princess Dixon-Dawson, the mother of a mentee turned mentor in the TRUE unit. “They brought all the guys’ families in to explain what they were going to be doing, and that’s just not how it worked before. They gave us the numbers of the counselors and explained what they hoped to accomplish. It showed they were really putting in the effort to bring us into the fold.”. But a system grounded in dignity benefits all of us.
