Fayez Mohamood made improv classes mandatory for employees when he started software company Bluecore Inc. in 2013. “How do you [act] brave when you don’t know what to say next? Those are life skills…especially in a startup environment,” he said. Sometimes, improv flops make people more confident in business settings. Dick Costolo, former chief executive of Twitter Inc., started doing improv in Chicago after graduating from the University of Michigan with a computer-science degree in 1985. Mr. Costolo, a consultant for the HBO comedy show “Silicon Valley,” performed onstage for about a decade. He wasn’t always funny. Eventually, he became comfortable with the idea of not knowing what comes next.
His performance skills came in handy at work a few months ago, when he was asked to present a proposal for a new feature to a director. “I try to take almost every opportunity I can to present at work because of the confidence I feel from performing onstage,” he said.
