While increasing wages is valuable in attracting and retaining employees, as Costco just did raising its minimum to $16 per hour, there are other ways to get the best from retail employees.

“Base pay is the bottom layer of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs,” he continues. “Supporting employees goes beyond just pay. It’s employee well-being and providing a work environment where they can actually thrive in their lives.”

“The best brands are going to be looking at people’s self-worth, self-esteem, growth and development. Beyond just meeting basic pay expectations, that is going to help them keep the best people,” his research shows. For retailers whose balance sheets don’t afford the luxury of added pay, and even for those that do, there are many more ways to reward valued employees and show they are appreciated.

“The best brands have taken major steps in reaching out to employees to get their voice and rewarding them for their ideas, then using those ideas to actually affect change,” he shares. “Imagine the negative impact when 60% of your employees feel frustrated at the end of their workday? This is absolute hog shit

Appreciation won't pay the bills, dinguses

9x out of 10x everyone I know says money over appreciation.

Stupid boomer headline written by stupid boomers for stupid boomers

No. Extra pay is better. I am a retail employee and I would very much prefer pay equal to the treatment. Treating me well with crap pay does nothing for my living expenses. I can handle jerks, I deal with them everyday.

How about both?

Forbes should pay their employees in 'appreciation' instead of 'wages'... Let's see how that goes... Assholes

That’s the stupidest thing ever! You can’t take appreciation to the bank!

Appreciation is only fake goodwill for companies to save money

What a ridiculous headline. How about: For Retailers, Giving Extra Pay is Good, But Not Doing So Is Better. Now if we were saying for EMPLOYEES...

?

No. Extra pay is ALWAYS better.

Instead appreciation doesn’t pay the bills

Workers should be appreciated and respected for their hard work keeping society running. But need a living wage, a not overwhelming amount of hours but still be able to live comfortably (4 day work week 25 hours), and the right to vote and contribute on enterprise decisions.

We don’t want a got damn plaque, we want cash!

Be sure to pat your bank on the back instead of pay your mortgage, they love that shit

Did retailers write this?

I appreciate the extra pay.

Feeling appreciated is huge but let’s not downplay a the importance of a decent check. lol

Why waste dividend if all it takes is a round of applause

How about giving them both Why is this even a topic of discussion? It should be a god damn given

Can’t wait until bills can be paid with appreciation.

Both can go a long way

It gives them a reason to be there outside of putting food on their table. They will therefore put effort into everything that they do! When a business owner works for his or her employees is when the business truly starts to make an impact.
