We asked CNN readers how inflation has impacted their eating habits. Here's what they said.

New York Lisa Altman used to take pride in being able to eat what she wanted without worrying much about the cost.

When she was growing up, seconds weren't served and side dishes were rare."My mom had a budget every week, and she stuck to it," she said."As I got older and became more financially independent, having a full pantry and being able to eat what I wanted was a sign of success for me," she added. "It was very humbling to have to go from that situation to where we're at right now." Altman and her wife live in Austin, Texas with their three children.

Local markets, generic brands help family save money on groceries 01:25Rick Wichmann, 64, and his wife have been dining out less often in recent years, due to the pandemic and in an effort to eat healthier. With menu prices rising because of inflation, they see no reason to change their habits. "Eating out is expensive," he said, noting that he's often happier with home-cooked meals than restaurant food anyway. But grocery shopping is also more expensive.

Turning to gardening to save money on food 01:33Like Wichmann, Jenni Wells, 38, pays attention to weather patterns and food systems. A former chef and rancher, she noticed price increases well before the current bout of inflation. "My alarm bells started going off for prices going up in 2019," she said, when devastating floods in the midwest drowned livestock and destroyed grain stocks. Wells decided back then that she'd like to be more self sufficient.

I shop the sales more mindfully. Otherwise, I'm fortunate enough that it hasn't really affected me.

3SSS

The article SHOULD BE about RECORD CORPORATE PROFITS!! JFC CNN DO YOUR FUCKING JOB!!!!!!!

Stop complaining CNN Inflation is Global

This is not how it works.

Hmm. How has inflation impacted the eating habits of a retired senior citizen (that's me, in my 70s) with no savings... Not much. You know what would REALLY impact my eating habits? If the GOP decided to kill Social Security. Because I would have NO income.

Yes CNN, you convinced me that it's so bad I'll vote for a Republican in Nov. Remind me again what their plan is to fix inflation and the economy. Oh that's right, their idea is to do away with our SS and Medicare.

Nowadays I eat bricks 🧱

I had to cut back on the quality of the media I was consuming so I started watching CNN.

All a ploy between GOP and big businesses ( who they cater to) to make the Dems look bad. People need to stand up to these people running everything to suit themselves.

It hasn’t.

美国现在物价上涨了吗

We are eating way less meat, or reinventing recipes to be made with less expensive proteins, like turkey. It's not quite the same, but it's still really tasty. And we're paying much closer attention to sales tags on certain items. We stick to a list to prevent impulse buying.

Good because the US has way to many Fat people including our old president

Another Joe Biden screw up

Conservative Republican here. Biden incompetent of course but the drunken spending by Bush Obama AND Trump as well as Biden put the country in this mess. Biden to some extent the bag man. It was going to happen.

Your fault CNN. Lying In news and backing the Democrats in a double standard

Just stop eating or redefine what starvation means.

Alex, what is the smallest sample ever?

Thanks democrats

Just two adults in our home.. our grocery bill for this past month makes it feel like both kids are back in the house. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Shop what’s on sale and freeze more for later. Cut back on expensive meat not good for you anyway. Cut out all over priced junk food and eat healthy fruits and vegetables. Many areas have produce stands. Much cheaper than grocery stores. Buy in bulk when you can.

FJB

Two words. Grocery Outlet

Maybe they could interview people who already knew to buy store brands at the less pricey stores, the people who already had to wait for sales and coupons? I’m guessing that might be a larger segment of the population.

Pretty sure the average American could afford to lose a few pounds. Silver lining.

I’m just more careful… it’s actually helped me to pay attention to what I buy.

Some can barely afford to buy a decent meal for their family and they make to much for economic assistance. The terrible part is the snap department wants gross income then, how much rent, and utilities, doesn't include cell phone bills, car payment, car insurance, medical bills.

The democrat utopia!!

I paid $75 for just 14 items today. Think the most expensive item was a pack of chicken thighs for $11.

I shop the deals! Every week we eat what’s on sale and I buy up deals to freeze for the next month or two. I have set aside canned and dried foods that were also on sale. I know there is a lot of global food insecurity right now and I am grateful that I can provide family meals.

I've lost my taste for meat, I cook more and I'm actually eating healthier foods.

I did that

Thanks for the inflation. Lost me some weight
