These concerns saw the Food Standards Agency advise against mandatory fortification in 2002.Since World War Two, the UK's non-wholemeal flour has been fortified with iron, calcium and two other B vitamins - thiamin and niacin. That's because the gains need to be carefully weighed against any potential harms.Clearly, getting enough folic acid around conception and during pregnancy is important for cutting the risk of women having babies with spina bifida or other neural tube defects.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said folic acid-fortified flour would be "a quick, simple win" to enhance a baby's development, as well as helping to boost the health of UK adults. The government said it did not anticipate the move would require a major overhaul for industrial-scale flour producers - the B vitamin would need to be listed on the labelling of all foods made with flour.
Pregnant women can't figure this out?
I wonder if cannabis consumption when young increases the chances of birth defects? One for the medical world ?
A bit OTT to prevent what is essentially 200 cases a year...and what if you don't eat bread? It can be obtained through other sources anyway.
Healthy lifestyle can prevent chances but isn’t it genetic And shouldn’t food be natural?
Why are there so many weirdos in the comments here. Folic acid is recommended before conception so women of child bearing age would benefit. Surely receiving extra vitamins is a benefit to everyone not just pregnant woman
Thought it was already in and serials too.
I'm quite happy with my birth defect I'm 54 years old only had 2 operations in that time I ride motorbikes work 12 hour days and my clubfeet work fine my daughter has spina biffida and apparently its genetic so don't worry most of us with defects are quite happy thanks
The people outraged by this 😂
blokes won't get pregnant so it won't affect us
In the 60s my mum ate raw liver during her 3rd pregnancy for iron? My brother was born with spina bifida. Mum blamed herself for this.
Majority of ‘antis’ seem to be male. Despite modern views, these people will never have the responsibility of growing a human inside them. Do they know that their cereal probably already has added folic acid I wonder 🤔
Is this to counteract a vaccine effects
Why complicate so much the matters! And anyway, why you should put something not everyone need in their body in something that basic like bread 🍞. You need folic acid Ask your GP.
Can’t understand why women thinking about pregnancy, or who are pregnant, don’t take responsibility for themselves and do what they’re advised to do
So the paper from Harvard Health that showed there could be adverse health risks besides the ones listed here was disproved was it? It also said that benefits were overall 'disappointing'. No mention.
Or maybe just eat folate rich foods?
Folic acid occurs naturally in a wide variety of foods, including flour, meat and veg. You’ve been eating it for years. But someone has now decided it’s a good axe to grind, Why?
Exactly why I make my own sourdough, I know exactly what’s in it. Flour, water and salt.
Why not just encourage women to take folic acid? Changing the composition of our food seems extreme, given some people have allergies or may not eat that type of food
I thought they already did!
Remember this when the government said it was OK
In case you are hiring online writters, I write reviews about movies and series, here is a sample of my work (or I can work in any other area like politics, for example) I accept start for minimum wage.
And what if you can't eat bread due to an allergy
NGL I thought it already was! 🤷🏻♂️ I don't see the point of the exemptions list though.
That is a great idea.
Bad move
It may be for birth control. Be vigilant this is BBC.
